Colorful Felt Butterflies

It is a little late in the season to post my beautiful butterflies. I started to make them just before our trip. In Dominican Republic we have delicate, colorful butterflies all year round.

I cut out two sets of wings using two different shades of felt and a different shape for each. I then made some little circular shapes on the lower wing and glued the two shades together with a glue gun.  It enabled the color from the upper wing to show through. Then the body was formed by gently wrapping colored wool around pipe cleaners and forming to little antennae with extra wool.  I carefully sewed the body onto the wings with colored embroidery floss, attaching floss strings to the upper side of the wings to hang from a tree.

The children were out riding the trails with their papa whilst I completed the last butterfly.  When they returned they were mesmerized by the beautiful mobile of butterflies hanging from the large pine tree shading our camp.

Amin, who has a beautiful website called www.zuluart.co.uk, has amazing photographs of butterflies.  He is a professional photographer who loves to capture emotions of children and colorful butterflies.
